JABBERWOCKY Lewis Carroll (from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872) `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought -- So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his joy. `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. Today I decided to stay in the creative realm. My students will be overwhelmed with the Common Core high expectations, so I stayed with a creative prompt for writing. We have been focusing on allusion especially with Alice in Wonderland. Today started with a quick write and we re-visited it later in the day. We also continued our reading of certain chapters of Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I tried to convey to students that they must be like crime scene investigators. We read half of the chapter together, groups and then re-visited key passages to find evidence for theme. PART 1-
STUDENTS WATCHED THIS BEFORE THERE QUICK WRITE- THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO VIEW THIS FROM A WRITERS PERSPECTIVE....THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO IMAGINE GOING THROUGH THEIR OWN METAPHORICAL RABBIT HOLE.
PART 1
PART 2 READING-
This is a much longer and better that the previous clip posted on the July 17th. This one shows the rabbit hole that Alice must go down. It shows her looking for answers to where she is....she is nervous to find out about this underground facility. Alice has been here - it is like she is in a dream. The best evidence of allusion is the virtual computer image of a little girl. She has Alice's clothing, accent is British and she has logical calculated answers. Alice continues searching for the monsters- and finds a clone of herself...this can be a reference to her changing bodies in the original Alice in Wonderland. It is not a perfect match, but is only an vague outline of the original text.
Today students watched 30 minutes of Alice in Wonderland and took Allusion notes. Students did their first official draft of "I Am Poem"- required two images, and five new words they have not used before or often. We also worked with a new Graphic Organizer- Citing Evidence, quotations, Inferences, Commentary...with Sherman Alexie's "Absolutely True Diary of Part Time Indian." We also read Joy Harjo's She Has Some Horses Sherman has a way of creating vivid images using similes and metaphors. His tone is humorous, which is amazing since the events he talks about are very serious. ALLUSION was another thing we covered today. This is a reference to another person, event, historical work or work of literature. The works of literature used the most in Western culture is: The Bible Greek Mythology Alice in Wonderland We watched a little bit of Alice in Wonderland and I spoke about modern movies that alluded to Alice in Wonderland. One is Resident Evil....
Jump Start- Tuesday,
objective: Reflective writings, analysis of personality using Jung's Typology personality results, Cornell notes review and SIFT Methods notes. Students wrote a paragraph on their personality type- after taking test on Monday. Students took the Multiple Intelligence Test to find strengths Students took C.N on the SIFT METHOD Students marked the text using the SIFT METHOD OBJECTIVE: SW GET TO KNOW THEMSELVES AND TEACHER, FIND A NOVEL AND TAKE FACTION PERSONALITY TESTS- ANALYZE SELF BY READING ONLINE PERSONALITY QUIZ.
This day broke summer for my Jump Start students. They were expected to take a Divergent Faction quiz, describe that faction. They took a very difficult Typology personality quiz based on Jung's research on different attitudes. They had to analyze the results and summarize themselves in their own words. They had to understand what introverted and extroverted mean. They choose a novel and also read it. |
